Nutmeg Export Guide: Loading Spice Containers in Jakarta

A good spice shipment can lose value before it reaches the buyer if bags absorb moisture, kernels are crushed, or cargo shifts at sea. For importers planning the 2026 season, loading deserves the same attention as origin and grade. This guide explains how to prepare nutmeg (pala), White Cardamom (kapulaga putih), and Candlenut (kemiri) for 20ft and 40ft full-container-load shipments from Jakarta, with practical safeguards for mixed spice consignments.

Published September 21, 2026. TasikSpice, based in the Tasikmalaya highlands of West Java, offers Indonesian nutmeg originating from North Sulawesi and Maluku. The recommendations below support shipment planning; final packaging, acceptance limits, and loading quantities should follow the purchase contract, destination requirements, and the actual cargo measurements.

Nutmeg Quality and Packaging Before Container Loading

Nutmeg comes from Myristica fragrans. Its export quality depends on mature harvesting, careful drying, clean shelling where applicable, and sorting before packing. Fruit that naturally splits is a useful maturity indicator, but harvest practices and drying conditions still require close supervision. A container cannot correct inadequate drying or remove contamination already present in a lot.

For whole nutmeg, confirm whether the order covers shelled kernels or nuts in shell. Agree on size or count, soundness, broken material, insect damage, foreign matter, and moisture specifications. Trade grade names alone are insufficient because interpretations can vary between suppliers. Buyers sourcing Sulawesi nutmeg should request lot identification and origin records alongside representative samples.

Before dispatch, use an agreed sampling plan and suitable laboratory testing to verify contractual and destination limits, including aflatoxins where applicable. Low moisture readings do not prove that a lot is free from mycotoxins. Keep test reports connected to the specific shipment lots, and retain sealed reference samples for any later quality discussion.

Packaging must suit each spice rather than applying one bag specification across the order. Clean, food-contact-compliant woven outer sacks with suitable inner liners may work for nutmeg and White Cardamom, subject to the agreed moisture barrier and handling requirements. White Cardamom pods need protection against crushing and aroma loss. Shelled Candlenut requires particular attention to breakage and oxidation because of its oil content.

Never seal warm or inadequately dried spices into barrier packaging. Confirm that product temperature has stabilized before closure. Mark each package with the product, lot, origin, net and gross weights, and any required handling information. If different moisture conditions or odor sensitivity make co-loading unsuitable, separate shipments are the better commercial choice.

Planning 20ft and 40ft FCL Loads from Jakarta

A standard 20ft dry container commonly provides roughly 33 cubic meters of internal volume, while a standard 40ft provides around 67 cubic meters. These figures are planning references, not usable cargo guarantees. Pallets, irregular bag shapes, protective materials, and securing arrangements reduce available space. A 40ft high-cube is a different equipment option and must be specified separately.

Do not assume a 40ft container can carry twice the weight of a 20ft container. Verify the assigned unit's tare, maximum gross mass, and payload, together with carrier restrictions and applicable inland transport limits. Dense nutmeg or Candlenut shipments may reach a weight constraint before filling the container; bulky White Cardamom may reach the space constraint first.

Calculate capacity from actual packed units. Record each bag or carton's external dimensions and gross weight, build a trial stack, and determine the footprint and height of each pallet if palletizing. Compare the resulting volume plan with the permitted cargo mass. Include pallets, liners, bracing, and other packing materials in the weight calculation.

For mixed loads, prepare a loading diagram showing the quantity and location of every product and lot. Distribute weight across the floor and along the container, keeping the center of gravity reasonably low and centered. Do not place heavy nutmeg sacks directly over fragile cardamom cartons without a load-bearing arrangement designed for the stack. Separate Candlenut lots with clear identification and appropriate protective packaging.

Floor loading can improve space use, but palletization often simplifies mechanical handling and inspection. Confirm the buyer's unloading facilities before choosing. Where regulated solid-wood packaging is used, ensure compliance with applicable ISPM 15 requirements. Agree on stack heights and compression limits rather than filling every available gap at the expense of product condition.

Moisture Control, Loading Checks, and FOB Documentation

Inspect the empty container before loading at the Jakarta stuffing location. It should be clean, dry, free from infestation and objectionable odors, and structurally sound. Check the roof, walls, floor, and door seals for damage or possible water entry. Reject a unit with contamination or unresolved defects that could compromise food cargo.

Load under cover during wet weather and keep packages off damp surfaces. Temperature changes during the voyage can cause condensation, especially when moisture enters through cargo, pallets, or packaging. Select container desiccants according to the supplier's guidance for the route, duration, and moisture burden; secure them to prevent leakage or direct product contact. Desiccants cannot compensate for wet cargo.

Use suitable protective barriers where packages could contact condensation-prone surfaces. Secure stacks against shifting with appropriate blocking, bracing, or dunnage, and protect the doorway so cargo does not fall when opened. A dry container's passive vents should not be treated as active humidity control. Photograph the container condition, loading stages, final securing, and numbered seal.

Before gate-in at Tanjung Priok, reconcile the packing list with the commercial invoice and booked quantities. Coordinate export customs formalities, shipping instructions, and the verified gross mass submission before the relevant cutoffs. Confirm whether the destination requires phytosanitary documentation, certificates of origin, treatment records, or additional food-safety evidence; requirements differ by product and market.
